Natural stone flooring has always felt right in a kitchen. It brings warmth, texture and a sense of permanence that is hard to achieve with manufactured materials. Because each tile is formed naturally, no two floors are ever quite the same – the colours, markings and subtle variations all become part of the character of the room. Despite the huge advances in the quality of the porcelain tiles, you really can’t beat a real stone floor!
Whether you are renovating a traditional country kitchen, updating a contemporary space or restoring a period property, natural stone tiles can be both a practical and beautiful choice, designed to be lived with every day and enjoyed for decades.
At Naos, we have spent more than 20 years helping customers choose the right flooring for their homes. Our curated collection includes high-quality limestone, marble and other stone floor tiles, with friendly guidance from selection through to installation and aftercare.
Why choose natural stone flooring for your kitchen?
Kitchens work hard. They need a floor that can cope with daily use, changing temperatures, spills, muddy shoes and family life, while still looking considered and beautiful within the overall interior design of the home.
Natural stone flooring is well suited to that balance. Some of the main benefits include:
- Exceptional durability for busy family kitchens
- A timeless appearance that creates a real sense of permanence
- Unique natural variations and subtle differences in colour
- Excellent compatibility with underfloor heating systems
- Suitability for both traditional and contemporary living spaces
- An ideal choice for kitchens, dining rooms and garden rooms
- Added value and character for your home
Rather than dating quickly, high-quality stone tends to settle into a home and develop more character over time. With the right stone, finish and care, your kitchen floor can feel just as inviting years from now as it does when it is first installed.
Choosing the right natural stone floor tiles for your kitchen
The right natural stone floor tiles will depend on the age and style of your home, how much use the kitchen gets and the overall look you want to achieve. Rather than thinking only in terms of limestone flooring, marble flooring or flagstone flooring, it is often more helpful to consider the colour, texture, finish and format that will work best in the space.
Softer, tumbled stones can create a relaxed and lived-in feel that suits country kitchens and period properties, while cleaner finishes and larger formats can give natural stone a more contemporary edge. Marble can bring a more refined finish, while flagstones offer texture and character, but the best result comes from choosing a material that suits the way you live.
You need to see these materials in the flesh and ideally bring along any other elements of the kitchen. For example, paint colours, cabinet colours & textures, worktop samples etc. Seeing the tiles in person makes a real difference, as natural stone can vary beautifully from piece to piece. Our showroom has lots of stone floors laid so you can fully understand the nature of the products.
Is natural stone flooring easy to maintain?
Yes and No! Bear with me…
You need to be slightly sensible. A plain white limestone tile is going to look dirty if you have a busy household with kids, dogs, wellies – as would any plain white surface. But there is more to this subject regarding stone choices. Ideally you should select a stone floor which can be sealed effectively such that it can be maintained with a natural stone soap and not a more aggressive cleaner.
Professional sealing requires fully filling the capillaries of the stone, the sealer doesn’t sit as a barrier on the surface, instead the natural stone soap which is used for routine cleaning forms a temporary wear layer each time you wash the floor. It also enhances the look of the stone. This only works if the stone can be sealed to a high standard.
Some stones do not seal efficiently and you end up needing to clean them with more aggressive cleaners which remove the soap leaving you with a bare stone which we already noted isn’t sealed adequately so things go downhill. You are always trying to clean a badly sealed piece of rock.
The good news is that not all limestones are the same. Many are extremely tough and easy to get along with. They take bumps and knocks, varied tones hide a bit of dust and dirt, and actually if you do manage to stain or damage them, we can repair them. You don’t need to worry about looking after a well-chosen, well fitted stone floor!
If you want to know where the real trouble lies for fitting stone tiles or any rigid finish, the drop of red wine is not the problem – see our blog on subfloors! This really is important.
We provide you with the right care kits and keep the products here if needed. We can also carry out specialist cleaning, repairs and resurfacing if ever required.
Is natural stone flooring suitable with underfloor heating?
Yes – and it is one of the reasons natural stone is such a popular choice for kitchens.
Stone conducts and retains heat extremely well, making it an excellent partner for underfloor heating systems.
Once warm, the floor releases heat evenly into the room, creating a comfortable living space while supporting efficient heating. This is especially useful in open-plan kitchens, dining areas and garden rooms where comfort matters just as much as appearance.
